Mahatma Gandhi was a man of great compassion and dedication who spent time in various prisons over the course of his life. He often abstained from food to force those in charge to take him seriously and ultimately to release him. Gandhi was imprisoned along with his wife in Aga Khan Palace Prison from 1942- 1944. His wife died there and Gandhi became ill as a result of the imprisonment. Gandhi spent his life speaking out against and fighting for human rights in Africa, India and throughout the world.
